So, for those of you who don’t know, we had a 5.7 earthquake here last week. And it originated only about 10 miles away, so we felt it! When it started, I first thought Kendall was jumping off he couch, so I yelled to her, asking her what she was doing. About 2 seconds later, when I realized it was an earthquake, I told the girls to come stand by me in the doorway. At the end of it, Kendall asked, “What’s that shaking, Mom?” I told her it was an earthquake, and she said, “Let’s do it again!”

The next day, while the girls were napping, I felt an aftershock. I told them about it when they woke up, and Morgan asked, “Oh… Sissy did it?”

Pretty Mom?

When I brush the girls’ hair, I always say, “Oh, you look so pretty.” So, when Kendall brushed my hair the other day, I asked if I looked pretty.

“No, not yet.” She said. (Ouch!) Fortunately, she brushed for another minute and said, “Okay, now you look pretty!”

Stinky Sis

While the girls are still not potty-trained, they very quickly notice when someone needs a new diaper… especially when it’s the other one. Yesterday, Kendall needed a diaper change, and I overheard Morgan tell her, “Sis, you’re stinky. Will you change you please?” Maybe they will start encouraging each other to use the potty!

Competitive Nature

Lately, the girls get upset when they don’t get to do something first. (Walk out the door, get in the car, etc.) As we walked home from the playground the other day, a woman walked past us, and quickly ran up the stairs before us. Kendall yelled out, “Hey, lady, I said WE go first!”

Banana Moon

As we drove home the other night, Morgan said, “Look! There’s the moon! It looks like a banana.”

I thought it was pretty amusing, since it really did look like a banana, so I played along and said, “Maybe you could eat it.”

“You can’t eat it, Mom.”

“Oh, why not?”

Kendall couldn’t be left out of the action, so she chimed in, “Because it’s in the sky.”

“Oh, but why can’t you eat it?” I asked again.

“Because we don’t have wings,” Kendall responded, although it was as if she was adding, “Duh!”

Applying the Music Knowledge

As our girls have recently started a co-op mom pre-school, they are learning new songs weekly. “Row, row, row your boat” is now a new favorite. I was happy to hear that the tune can be applied to many other great principles of life. Morgan told her sister to wait her turn, and promptly started singing, “Wait, wait, wait your turn, wait, wait your turn…”

Pink Shirts

I have a light pink dress shirt that I like to wear to work occasionally. Although my coworkers poke fun at it, I’ve received many compliments for wearing such a colorful shirt and being “manly” enough to wear pink.

Last week, as I walked to my car in the morning, Kendall (3) waved goodbye to me from the balcony. “Hey dad,” she yelled, “your shirt matches my pink dress!”

Budding Lyricist

Elaine (my wife) is always making up songs for the girls - about anything. It’s what musicians do I guess. Recently, we’ve been watching as Morgan (3) learns this talent from her mom.

As Elaine helped Morgan swim around the pool, kicking her legs she started to sing:

“Swimmin’ in the water… floatin’ on my tummy…”

Whenever I play with the girls and pat them on the bottoms, they tell me, “Don’t spank me, mom.” I quickly tell them I’m not spanking, I’m just giving love pats. So, the other day, I laid down on the floor, only to have Kendall come jump on my stomach. I asked her not to jump on me, and she responded, “No, Mom, they’re just love jumps.”

A Lesson in Race

The girls haven’t really grasped the concept of race. Instead, they refer to people based on the color of their shirt.

So when Morgan (3) wanted to know about the fellow park visitors she asked, “Mom, what’s that blue mom’s name is? Mom, what’s that brown boy’s name is?”

It wasn’t embarrassing until we realized that the little boy wearing the brown shirt was also African American.
